Stratford Primary School (S.P.S) is a Full Primary (Year 1-8) situated in attractive, extensive and well maintained grounds. This includes beehives, chicken coop, fruit trees, class gardens, composting areas and attractive artwork. Students (ākonga) also enjoy a range of play opportunities using sports fields and quality playground facilities.
In 2025, the school was awarded the Blake Award for outstanding sustainability education, integrating gardens, orchards, and beehives into daily learning, making the school “a national example of environmental commitment”.
The school roll is approximately between 450-465 students, with 29% of ākonga identifying as Māori. Other ethnic groups include New Zealand European (61%), Pasifika, Asian, Middle East, and European. There are 17 classrooms. 5 in the Junior School (Yr 1-2), and 4 classrooms in each of the other teams (Yr 3-4, Yr 5-6 and Yr 7-8). Over 50 staff are employed to support ākonga with their education, which includes many learning support teachers (teacher aides) and support programmes to ensure all tamariki have the opportunity to succeed at S.P.S.
The school offers tamariki a range of sporting, academic and cultural experiences. All ākonga participate in Kapa Haka. S.P.S Tikanga is evident in classroom and around the school. Ākonga are also developing their capability to speak Te Reo Māori and other languages such as French and Spanish.
Year 7-8 ākonga are offered a wide range of learning experiences, including coding, visual art, photo animation, digital photography, Food Technology, Hard Materials, Dance and Digital Design. They learn Mathematics and Reading in Year Level Cohorts, while they spend most of their time in their Home Room exploring a range of topics (including Writing) through the Pākiki Inquiry Model. Senior ākonga are also offered different leadership opportunities.
Ākonga enjoy a positive, safe environment conducive to learning, where success is celebrated. They have strong sense of belonging, while their are respectful relationships with their teachers and peers – Manaakitanga.
