We are nearly halfway through Term 2.
Speeches: It has been exciting to see the engagement of our Year 5-8 ākonga with their speeches. As I walk around the school, I have witnessed many ākonga practising their speeches with their friends. It is particularly pleasing to see the shy and less confident ākonga giving it a go. Speeches help ākonga build their confidence, share ideas and express opinions with their peers. Ākonga are supported to share their speeches with the audience that they feel most comfortable with. For example, the whole class, a small group of ākonga, their teacher and/or a video recording. In the next few weeks we will also be holding our speech finals for Yr 5-8 ākonga, where they will present their speech in front of the Yr 5-8 team.
Year 4-8 ākonga have been engaged with the Mathematics PAT Assessments. This standardised assessment provides teachers with a snapshot of their Mathematics progress, while teachers can use the assessment to determine which areas need further teaching and which areas ākonga are doing well in. We will also be assessing tamariki with the PAT Reading Comprehension Assessment in the common weeks. Both assessments will support teachers with overall teacher judgements that they make during regular classroom programmes. Later this term, I will share trends from the assessments with whānau, including areas that can be worked on at home.
Inter School Sport: All the best to our Year 5-6 ākonga who host Fitzroy School today in different sports. Our visitors will be welcomed with a whakatau (informal welcome) before the sports start.
Week 5, Term 2: Monday 26 to Friday 30 May
# Monday 26 May: Yr 1-2 – Life Education; Yr 5-6 – Vaping Education; Yr 7-8 – Tech Week; Board Meeting at 5pm in the Conference Room.
# Tuesday 27 May: Yr 1-2 – Life Education; Yr 5-6 – Rippa Rugby Tournament; Yr 7-8 – Tech Week.
# Wednesday 28 May: Yr 7-8 – Tech Week; 1.40pm Ākonga Council Hui.
# Thursday 29 May: Yr 7-8 – Tech Week; St John First Aid Courses.
# Friday 30 May: Assembly at 9.15am, all whānau are welcome to attend; Yr 7-8 – Basketball after school.
Reminders:
# Teachers Only Day (No school on Monday 23 June): School will be closed as teachers will have Professional Development based around the new Mathematics Curriculum.
# Winter Term Hours (Term 2 and 3): 8.45am to 2.35pm.
